SuperKiwi: How a grocery store turned into a multi-vendor e-commerce platform

SuperKiwi began as a large-scale grocery retailer in the Dominican Republic looking to move its business online, not as a simple digital storefront, but as a full multi-vendor e-commerce platform connecting multiple markets in one place. A previous agency had delivered a half-built website on an obscure, undocumented framework, riddled with persistent bugs and a UI that fell short of the client's standards, with no mobile app in sight.

CHALLENGE

A fragile, undocumented foundation left the team unable to move quickly: an obscure framework with no documentation made even small changes slow and risky to ship. The existing UI fell well short of the client's standards, undermining usability and everyday shoppers' trust, and there was no mobile app to match the ambitions of the redesigned web platform. Stripe is not a legal payment processor in the Dominican Republic, so a dual-gateway approach was needed to serve every user compliantly, alongside advanced search and location-based discovery to connect shoppers with nearby markets.

SOLUTION

Rev9 rebuilt the web platform on Bootstrap and Core PHP, restoring a stable, fully documented foundation for product listings, user profiles, order management, and mart integration. The team then engineered a native Flutter mobile app from scratch with a Laravel backend, bringing the same feature set to mobile with full parity to the web experience. On top of that foundation, Rev9 layered in MeiliSearch for typo-tolerant product discovery, a multi-store checkout system, location-based market discovery, and a dual payment-gateway architecture pairing Stripe with Cyber Source to serve every user compliantly in the Dominican Republic.

OUTCOMES

Rev9 delivered a stable, fully documented multi-vendor platform across web and mobile, replacing the fragile, undocumented codebase left by the previous agency. A new Flutter mobile app launched with full feature parity to the web experience, while a dual payment-gateway architecture solved a real payment-legality constraint in the Dominican Republic market. The engagement has since grown into an ongoing product partnership, with the client bringing Rev9 its next initiative.
